Developing the Self

My role as a Leadership Consultant has given me many opportunities to work on this competency. Developing the self is very important to me as someone who thrives off of learning opportunities. I am constantly looking for ways to grow and learn as a student and LC. This year, I was always volunteering to facilitate workshop requests that the LEAD office received. I jumped at every chance to better myself as an LC and to genuinely learn. For as long as I can remember, I have been the person to sign up and try everything. I like to think of myself as a “try-er but not always a liker,” meaning I am willing to do anything once.

Using my awareness of my strengths and weaknesses, I try hard to find opportunities to grow in both areas. I am very aware that I am a flawed human being, and that I need to work on a lot of things. One of my biggest areas to develop this year has been adapting to change. I know this is an area of weakness for me, and this job has given me ample experience with change. Being on a staff of ten others, I constantly had to work at this. I feel confident that I have grown in my flexibility, and will take that strength with me in my future endeavors.

I am excited to continue mastering this competency by looking for any chance to grow. I look forward to future workshops and programs at Mason, academic courses, and genuine soul searching to further my self development.
